...– infrared, visible, or ultraviolet light - impinges on the molecule under investigation and is scattered. The methods differ in scattering angle, in the energetics of the scattering process, the polarization of the scattered light, the temporal evolution of the signal, and the efficiency ("cross section") of the process. molecule scattered radiation incident radiation Bearing that in mind a classification of the methods is easily possible: "passive" optical diagnostics (uses natural flame emission) Optical flame photography black body radiation measurements e.g. of soot "active" optical...

...Sola Graduate Institute of International Studies Abstract This paper reconsiders the long term effect of fiscal policy on interest rates using a real-time dataset of macroeconomic and fiscal variables in a panel of 17 OECD countries over the period 1989-2009. We show that, after controlling for cross sectional dependence using a Factor Augmented Panel, interest rates are mostly related to global factors. Among domestic fiscal variables, the level of expected public debt mantains a positive correlation with interest rates, while among the global factors, the aggregate monetary and fiscal stance...

...systems without a little understanding of our own vision system. The human eye is a marvelous living-tissue optical system. In [4] plenty of information can be found just about the perception of contrast; however, for this introduction, a few facts will suffice. Consider figure 1-1 depicting a cross section of the eye. The retina is definitely one of the masterpieces of this extraordinary optical system. It is composed of ~130 million light sensors. Most of these sensors are specialized in sensing low brightness levels there are about 120 million `rods' for so-called scotopic vision. The...
